16th century diminutions | Silent Speech
This programme explores the 16th-century art of diminution as an expressive extension of the human voice. At the heart of this programme is Silvestro Ganassi’s La Fontegara (Venice, 1535), a treatise in which the recorder aspires to speak—shaped by breath, imagination, and eloquence.
Featuring original works by Tromboncino, Cara, Gombert, and Willaert, this programme reimagines vocal polyphony through ornamentation, improvisation, and instrumental dialogue. With newly composed diminutions in Ganassi’s style, the music comes alive as rhetorical speech—melodic lines that breathe, persuade, and converse. Intimate and richly layered, this concert invites listeners to hear the recorder not just as an instrument, but as a true voice—speaking across centuries

Ensemble Odyssee is an Amsterdam-based baroque ensemble, founded by Anna Stegmann, Eva Saladin, Andrea Friggi and Georg Fritz. With a passion for historically informed performance, we combine musicological research with vivid, expressive playing to rediscover the sound worlds of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Our most recent CD, dedicated to concertos by J.S. Bach, was released by Challenge Records in August 2025 and received international recognition, including several award nominations.
From 2027, we turn to the vibrant world of early 18th-century London with A Splendid Entertainment – Music Behind the Scenes of Baroque London, centred around the exhilarating recorder concertos of John Baston. Written for London's theatres, these works offer a glimpse into a colourful musical world beyond the main stage.
For this project, we collaborate with Jörn Boysen, who is creating new movements in historical style for three of Baston’s incompletely preserved concertos. A new CD for Challenge Records will be recorded in July 2027, followed by concerts in the Netherlands and across Europe from the 2027/28 season onwards.

Anna Stegmann & Jorge Jiménez bring together the distinctive worlds of recorder and violin in programmes that move freely between early and contemporary music. Their collaboration is driven by curiosity, experimentation and a shared fascination with finding unexpected connections across centuries.
Their new programme CREPUSCULUM – Music Between Light and Shadow explores the mysterious threshold of twilight: the moment when day and night, clarity and darkness seem to coexist. Medieval melodies and Renaissance diminutions meet music by Eugène Ysaÿe and other voices from across the centuries, creating a musical landscape in which familiar boundaries begin to blur.
At the heart of the programme is a new work by German composer Ulrich Schultheiss, written especially for the duo. Alongside it, Anna and Jorge explore the extraordinary colours of different recorders, baroque violin and vielle, allowing ancient and modern sound worlds to transform one another.
From 2027 onwards, CREPUSCULUM continues the duo’s exploration of music beyond conventional periods and genres: an intimate journey through shadow, transformation and the elusive space between darkness and light.
